Lotto No. 144

Cameroon Grasslands, Bamileke or Bamum: a round stool with a typical spider motif in openwork design.

Cameroon Grasslands, Bamileke or Bamum: a round stool with a typical spider motif in openwork design. - Tribal Art - Africa

A stool carved from hard, heavy wood and of dark brown colour. With a round seat and thick ring stand. Starting from this ring stand underneath, the whole stool has been hollowed from below and the remaining outer wall has been decorated with an all-round openwork spider motif. This spider motif holds special meaning in the art of the Cameroon Grasslands: for the ground spider, by virtue of living in the soil, also lives in an ‘underworld’ and is thus closer to ancestors than are the people living aboveground. For this reason, the ground spider is considered ‘wise’. This spider-stool presents with a good usage patina and only minor pieces broken off or slight tears. Otherwise in very good condition. Height: 30 cm; diameter: 34 cm (seat). First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance:
Austrian Private Collection.

Lit.:
'Afrikanische Sitze' by Sandro Bocola, ill. 59.
