Makonde, Tanzania, Mozambique: clubstick with a beautiful, typical Makonde head.
A clubstick carved from hard wood and coloured black and brown. Carved at the upper end is a three-dimensional head executed in perfect Makonde style. The head bears a high, angular crest, that would have been used as a clubhead or a handhold (when the club was in use). The entire object is crafted from a single piece of wood. This rare Makonde clubstick is old, lightly chipped at the edges and with a faint tear at the left side of the head. With visibly old usage patina. Height: 75 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
