Lotto No. 81

Cameroon, Kirdi, Fali or Mofu: an iron shield in a form typical of the tribes in the Mandara mountains in Northern Cameroon, with studded decoration.

Cameroon, Kirdi, Fali or Mofu: an iron shield in a form typical of the tribes in the Mandara mountains in Northern Cameroon, with studded decoration. - Tribal Art - Africa

Originally the shields belonging to the tribes from northern Cameroon were made from buffalo leather. Iron shields are a later development. However, the Kirdi, Fali or Mofus have retained the ‘bell shape’ of their earlier leather shields in their iron shields. Similarly, the beautiful, linear, symmetrical studded decoration around the flat, oval shield boss has been carried over from the ‘leather era’ to the ‘iron era’. This is, stylistically, a perfect piece in excellent condition. No significant damage. Height: 86 cm; width: c. 52 cm (centre), c. 70 cm (below). First half to mid-20th century. (ME)

Provenance:
Austrian private collection.

Lit.:
'Shields. From the Collections of the Barbier-Mueller-Museum’ by Benitez & Barbier, ill. 7, p. 48, 49 (an almost identical item); 'Afrikanische Schilde' by Plaschke & Zirngibl, ill. 36, 39.
