King Frederick II of Prussia with the star and band of the Order of the Black Eagle,
oil on canvas, 76.3 x 62.9 cm, framed
Despite the fact that this is a highly unusual image of the young Prussian King and not based on a known model it has eluded a definite attribution. Details, like the Order of the Black Eagle, which is rendered in a rather free interpretation of the most noble Prussian order, point to an artist possibly not active at the Prussian court. It appears to be an example of mid-18th Century European enthusiasm for the victorious King that reached its peak at the end of the second Silesian war. Contemporary sources mention an unprecedented fashion for Frederic memorabilia. The London shop windows for example were decorated with prints showing Frederic at that time. An English or Swedish court painter has been suggested and the present painting resembles the work of Edward Francis Cunningham.
