(Antwerp 1639 - c. 1700 Paris)
Portrait of Lucrezia Ruffo, Marchesa della Valle,
voil on canvas, 118 x 91 cm, framed
The present painting depicts Lucrezia Ruffo (1661–1722), daughter of Don Carlo, 3rd Duke of Bagnara, and Andreana Caracciolo. Lucrezia was the sister of the cardinal Tommaso Ruffo, one of the most important collectors of the 18th century between Ferrara and Rome. In 1673 she married Ferdinando Girolamo Alarçon y Mendoza, becoming the 7th Marquise della Valle Siciliana and Rende, as the coat of arm in the right hand corner of the painting shows.
The present painting is a product of the workshop of Jacob Ferdinand Voet and was probably executed by one of his pupils. An attribution to ‘Vincenzo scolaro di Ferdinando’, who was also documented as a painter in the service of the Marchese del Carpio, has been suggested.
We are grateful to Francesco Petrucci for his help in cataloguing the present lot.
