Lotto No. 114

Mannerist Painter, first half of 16th Century

Mannerist Painter, first half of 16th Century - Dipinti antichi

Venus mourning the death of Adonis,
oil on canvas, 113.5 x 193 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private European collection

The present painting derives from a composition by Giulio Romano which is documented by a drawing in Manchester, City Art Gallery and two further sketches that are conserved in the Louvre (inv. nos. 3490 and 3660).

The story of Adonis can be associated with a series of compositions treating the subject of hunting and the love between gods and mortals. The stories of Meleager, Hylaeus and Procris are documented in a series of drawings and paintings by Giulio Romano (see S. Massari, Giulio Romano pinxit et delineavit. Opere grafiche autografe, di collaborazione e bottega, Rome 1993, pp. 29-32, pl. 20-21).

It is possible that the present composition may relate to the destroyed decoration of the hunting lodge of the Gonzaga dukes at Marmirolo which dated to around 1531 (see F. Hartt, Giulio Romano, 1958, I, p. 225).
