Provenance:
Formerly in the Dominican Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Stetten near Hechingen (cf. a photograph from 1936 in the Marburg Photographic Archives);
Collection of the Princes of Hohenzollern, Sigmaringen (since the 1950s, inv. no. 7834, until circa 2005)
Down to the very last detail, the present painting is based on a composition by Albrecht Dürer from his ‘Engraved Passion’, published in 1512. The artist merely simplified such areas as the complicated draperies and the rendering of surface textures.
