Charon is the old and somber ferryman of Greek mythology who brings the dead to the underworld realms of Hades. For payment of “Charon’s coin”, he ferries the dead over the river Acheron in his boat. This mythological motif was popular both in art of the ancient world as well as being commonly used as a subject in modern painting.
Otto Brausewetter presents this scene with a series of excellently depicted emotional figures who have stoically surrendered themselves to their fateful ferryman.
