Carl Wilhelm Götzloff studied at the Academy of Arts in Dresden under Caspar David Friedrich and landscape specialist Friedrich Christian Klaß. In 1821 he traveled to Rome, where he joined the group of artists around Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and his circle. Later he moved to Naples, where he became court painter to the king of Sicily. Götzloff travelled extensively around Naples und further south to Sicily, painting views of such popular locations around the gulf of Naples and Sorrento. This view depicts Palermo with the dominating mass of Monte Pellegrino in the distance. The composition is enlived by the vibrant sunset and the playful interaction of the figures around the well in the foreground. This work was previously in the Schäfer Collection housed in the Schäfer Museum in Schweinfurt. Part of the collection was sold in 2005 to benefit the foundation which runs the museum in Schweinfurt.
