![Giacomo Favretto - Dipinti dell’Ottocento Giacomo Favretto - Dipinti dell’Ottocento](/fileadmin/lot-images/38N160421/normal/giacomo-favretto-1859321.jpg)
(Venice 1849–1887)
Caldo, signed G. Favretto, oil on canvas, 44 x 30 cm, framed, (GG)
Provenance:
Italian private collection.
Catalogued and illustrated in:
Renzo Trevisan, Giacomo Favretto 1849–1887, Edizioni La Tipografia Scorze, II. Edition, Venice 1999, p.192.
By 1885, the year in which the present lot was completed, Giacomo Favretto was already widely regarded as one of Venice’s most celebrated painters. Scenes of Venice and its inhabitants were to become Favretto’s most celebrated and sought after compositions.
The present lot shows a typical Venetian genre scene, a fragment of everyday life. The setting is humble: the visible furniture consists of a wooden chair and a cabinet on the right, with a portrait hanging on the wall in the background. The woman’s dress is depicted in vivid and contrasting colors. The attention Favretto pays to detail is particularly evident in the depiction of the seated couple. Their facial expressions denote simple delight. Favretto has captured an intimate moment between the two sitters. Another version of this subject is held in a private collection, with an additional figure on the left (Illustrated in: Giacomo Favretto 1849-1887, Renzo Trevisan, Ed. II, 1999, p.192).
