Combination writing and sewing table in Empire style, - Oggetti d'arte (mobili, sculture, vetri e porcellane)

A high quality piece from the end of the 20th century, modelled after work of the early 19th century. A cherry-veneered softwood table of serpentine form, set on a four-sided tapered plinth base, with black and gold caryatids, alternating with rich India ink painting on the frieze and upper scrolled area. A sophisticated opening mechanism works by means of a turning scroll, and a turning gold-painted knob releases a cabinet, with a three-drawer section which turns out and a mirror panel which is released; the mirror panel is pushed up to reveal a niche with balustrade and mirror decoration, and beneath this a drawer with compartments and lavish India ink painting, the frieze drawer serving as writing section with interior drawers and compartments, etc. Ca. 150 x 62 x 62 cm.
