Rare Empire bureau,
Vienna/Budapest ca. 1800/10. An ebonised and polished softwood bureau with arched top and interior drawers, with black and gold painted caryatids at the angles, acanthus leaf decoration, also with gold-painted bull’s eye mouldings, a cornice edge with mounts of lion heads. The upper writing section rests on round columns encircled in ivy; the lower section has a bombé door, and a drawer is positioned between the two. The bureau also features an architectural style fitted interior veneered in elm and with similar caryatids at the angles, with various interior drawers, a niche with a mirror on the back panel, and a writing surface veneered in yew. Ca. 172 x 98 x 45 cm. Various restorations and some mounts replaced. In restored condition. (DOC)
