Brussels (Netherlands), c. 277 x 333 cm, mid-18th century, complete tapestry made of silk and wool with a lively battle scene from Roman history, “The Rape of the Sabine Women”: in an attempt to acquire wives for themselves, the Romans decided to abduct their neighbours’ daughters and take them to the citadel on the Capitoline Hill; the scene depicted in the present piece is probably the last battle between the Romans and the Sabines, when the abducted women escape from the fortress and end the war by courageously interposing themselves between the two fronts and successfully mediating between them; the tapestry does not show any exposed warp threads and is ready for hanging, being reinforced with several strips of supporting linen on the back, numerous age-related repairs, in the centre of the lower galloon an unidentified signature "ORDEF".
