Phonola, - Mobili e arti decorative

Produced by Feurich/Hupfeld, No. 40089, ca. 1925, 7 ¼ octaves, cylinder mechanism with 50 rolls (Valse bleue, Elfen-Tanz, Dreimäderlhaus, Lohengrin etc.). The case has a black finish, a punch tape mechanism which can be seen if desired, and a keyboard in synthetic ivory. One stool. The silver lever under the box serves to extend the pedal for the bellows, the operating elements are located in the middle; there are 2 levers under the upper lid, which can release the central compartment for inserting the cylinder or, conversely, interpose a panel to cover the mechanism; the upright piano and cylinder mechanism were serviced around 10 years ago and the body freshly painted with polyester paint. The Phonola was developed by Ludwig Hupfeld from 1902 in Leipzig, as a player piano (“Klavierspielinstrument”), which initially had 73 of the total 88 notes which could be played on a piano. In the course of the next 30 years, the Phonola became the most successful mechanical musical instrument with an unbelievable distribution and use in the most diverse situations, as it could be used both as a piano and as a music box with music cylinders. Until the late 1920s, thousands of cylinders were produced for the Phonola. These sound documents are of great interest in the field of the history of music.
