The artist, whose real name was Manuel Ussel De Guimbarda, was one of the most important Spanish painters of his time. The artist’s family enjoyed social standing amongst Seville’s upper-middle class, so that it is unsurprising that De Guimbarda found many clients for his work. His repertoire included both historical and religious depictions as well as portraits of famous and respected personalities of Seville society. As a result of exhibiting frequently, his fame extended well beyond Seville.
