A thangka depicting Penden Lhamo (Shrimati Devi) in yabyum, East Tibet, Karma Gardri style, 18th/19th cent.
Gouache and gilt colour on textile. Finely painted, the blue-skinned goddess of protection is depicted surrounded by leaping flames, in a mystical union with her partner on the back of a mule standing on a lotus flower in a circle of rocks, to the background, blue-green mountains. Padmasambhava is shown in the heavens, one of the Five Sisters of Long Life riding a snow lion above clouds to the foreground. Traditional mount. Damaged. 27 x 18.2 cm/62 x approx. 34 cm. (BA)
