A portrait of a Mughal emperor. India, Mughal, before 1762

A portrait of a Mughal emperor. India, Mughal, before 1762 - Arte asiatica

Miniature painting, ink, colours and gold on paper. A Mughal emperor seated on a golden throne with baldachin on a terrace (probably Farrukhsiyar, r. 1713-1719) with a nimbus, wearing a pink robe with gilt pattern, mink collar and pink headdress adorned with a brooch with peacock feathers and a pearl, before him a gilt-coloured book on a cushion, probably the Koran. To light-blue sky, horizontal, striated clouds. To centre foreground, gilt owner’s mark, ‘Da(u) d Shah Wali wali’. It all probability, it is the mark of Shah Waliullah (1703-1762), an important Indo-Islamic philosopher of the 18th cent., who was active as advisor to the government in Delhi. Verso inscription, ‘R. C. Wa...(?)’. A few scratches. Dark blue margin, some damage. Image: 22 x 13.6 cm; sheet: 23.8 x 15.7 cm. (BA)

Provenance:
very probably from the ownership of Shah Waliullah (1703-1762); from a German private collection.
