A miniature painting of a princess (or Bani Thani) with a servant. India, Rajasthan, Kishangarh, last quarter of the 18th cent.
Ink, colours and gilt on paper. Represented is a princess seated to the right hand side of a terrace with a servant facing her, serving her a meal. The striking profile, large eyes and wide eyebrows were characteristic of the school of painting of Kishangarh, and are reputed to be based on the appearance of the singer and poet, Bani Thani, the great love of the Raja Savant Singh of Kishangarh (r. 1748-1764). It is possible that she is depicted posthumously here. Lower right corner of the image backed. Image: 14.4 x 10.9 cm. (BA)
