A free-standing cabinet, designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich - Design

for the 1900 Paris World’s Fair, manufactured by L. Schmitt, Vienna, mahogany veneer, maple marquetry, black stained mahogany floral carvings, mother-of-pearl inlays, two drawers and a secret compartment, height 185 cm, width 62.7 cm, depth 77.6 cm. (DRAX)

This free-standing piece of furniture formed part of the “Viennese Room” in the Austrian section of the Paris World’s Fair and was presented between two glass display cabinets. The motto had been to design luxurious furnishings for the “Salon of a princely pleasure yacht”. The ensemble was highly appreciated and was awarded the World’s Fair’s “Grand Prix”.
