Mixed lot (3 items): Indonesia, Java: Three Javanese shadow puppets of ‘wayang kulit’ type. Cut out of leather and painted. - Tribal Art

Three typical, Javanese shadow puppets of ‘wayang kulit’ type. Cut out of cowhide and punched, and finally painted. This form of shadow play with leather figures is the oldest form of shadow theatre and, according to legend, has been performed on Java and Bali from around one thousand years ago until today. With the flat ‘wayang kulit’ figures, scenes mostly from the old, Indo-Hindu epics ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Mahabharata’ are performed. Far more than one hundred different figures, who appear in ‘wayang kulit’ shadow theatre, are known (the ‘good’ from the right, the ‘evil’ from the left). Of the present three, relatively large ‘wayang kulit’ figures, two represent important kings or gods, with high crowns and many ornaments. The holding and guiding sticks are made out of horn. The third, smaller figure represents an evil demon or witch (probably ‘Rakshasi hutan’). All three pieces in good condition, with traces of usage, and no damage. H: 76 cm, 82 cm, 84 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
