Four charming, typical shadow puppet figures from Java (or Bali), known as ‘wayang kulit’. Cut out of cowhide and punched, and finally painted (for a more precise explanation see cat. no. 201). Three of the four figures have sticks for holding and guiding made of horn, one of wood. The four, relatively small but carefully crafted ‘wayang kulit’ figures probably represent two kings or gods, with high crowns and many ornaments, one prince, black with a pointed nose, and one demon (‘Rakshasa’), in blue with fangs. All four pieces in good condition, with traces of usage. The blue demon is missing a guiding stick, a small break in the crown of the larger figure (glued). H: 56 cm, 68 cm, 70 cm, 80 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
