Indonesia, Java: A shadow puppet figure of the type ‘Wayang kelitik’, head and body carved out of wood and painted, with arms of leather.

Indonesia, Java: A shadow puppet figure of the type ‘Wayang kelitik’, head and body carved out of wood and painted, with arms of leather. - Tribal Art

A Javanese shadow puppet figure of the type ‘Wayang kelitik’ (also called ‘Wayang klitik’). With this type, head and body including handle are always carved out of wood with relief on both sides, and painted in polychrome. Only the movable arms of the figure are always cut out of cowhide. With these ‘Wayang kelitik’ figures, dramas with many characters, from the period of the Majapahit kingdom (14th-15th centuries) are performed on Java. ‘Wayang kelitik’ figures (with wooden bodies) are significantly rarer than the more common ‘Wayang kulit’ shadow puppet figures, which are completely cut out of leather. The present, very beautiful ‘Wayang kelitik’ figure is visibly old and was often used in performances. It represents the Hindu god Vishnu or one of his incarnations (with ‘divine crown’). A piece with good usage patina, colour scuffing and minor, age-related damage. A fracture at the shoulder and hairstyle is fixed with wire, and the strut between both feet has been added and also attached with wire (old original repairs). H: c. 63 cm. Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
