A deep plate made of reddish terracotta (earthenware). Probably produced in northern Thailand. The upper facing side of the plate is exquisitely painted by hand. Grey-blue, on light-ochre coloured background and underglaze. In the centre is a circular medallion with five large floral motifs accompanied by a large band of six undulating leafy tendrils. The narrow outer margin displays simple wave motifs. The three parts of the decoration are divided by double lines. The reverse also displays painted curves, waves, volutes and dots; between two encircling double lines and in the middle of the unglazed, round, lower stand are painted signs (possibly a signature). Within the plate’s circle medallion, five small arched and unglazed areas are visible. These are the points where the plate rested on another supporting plate below, during the baking of the glaze, separated from each other by means of five pieces of baked clay. The outer margin of this charming plate is displays a few chipped areas. Otherwise no damage. H: 7 cm; DM: c. 32 cm. First half of the 20th century or earlier. (ME)
