Tibet: An old earring of a high official at the court of Dalai Lama. Made of gold,
turquoises, a pearl and a point of point of blue glass. Earrings such as the present one were the external symbol of a high minister’s rank and social prestige in ‘old Tibet’. Such status earrings consisted of a thick gold wire as bow. To this gold wire, curved in the upper section, were affixed conical rings made of granulated gold spheres and gold sheet, alternating with rings of foliate cut turquoises by means of resin. In the conical central section there is always a fresh water pearl. The lower end traditionally consists of a round, long spike made of blue glass. The high dignitaries of Tibet used to wear these ‘official’s earrings’ in their pierced, left earlobe. Its ‘pendant’ was only a small, cut turquoise stone on a string in the right earlobe. The present, old Tibetan ‘official’s earring’ is unusually complete and without damage. This is a rare condition. H: 15 cm. Probably 19th century or earlier. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.
