A Naga sword called ‘Dao’ (see cat. no. 172). With a single-edged, forward-widening blade bound in rattan to a long round wooden hilt. The respective wooden sheath, which is open to one side, is fastened with rattan straps to a wide girdle, which has two parts and is also made of rattan stripes overlaid with fabric (stitched) and dyed black. Large surfaces on the belt are decorated with patterns made of white seed pods — pierced, strung, and sewn to the belt. This bright outlook nicely contrasts to the black of the broad belt. The belt’s hook closure is made of wood and a piece of black cotton string. Visibly a very old ensemble, with its original parts together, exhibiting impressive wear and usage patina. Minor, age-related damage (a few missing white seed pods). H: 56 cm (sword in sheath); width of the belt: c. 13.3 cm. Between c. 1900 and the early 20th century. (ME)
