These Naga shoulder wraps from Manipur are called ‘elephant scarves’, as they always depict elephants in the centre. As is the case with our piece, which shows four elephants in the middle of the five embroidered horizontal stripes. The fabric is made up of two bands of fine, handwoven cotton sewn together. The expansive midfield is black and divided in five horizontal stripes by delicate white-red lines. Colourful stripes with central tassels finish the fabric to the left and right, while the upper and lower trims are red. The five horizontal stripes are richly embroidered with red, green and white silk on a black background. Embroidered with figures of: the four central elephants, yellow birds, colourful big blossoms and much more... Overall, an old piece with noticeable traces of usage and minor age-related damage (small holes and losses to the embroidery). Dimensions: c. 110 cm x 165 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.
