India: A small Hindu bronze: representing god Vishnu, ‘The Protector’.
This small Hindu bronze statuette from India represents Vishnu, ‘the Protector’, one of the three main gods of the Hindu (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva). The god is stood on a rectangular plinth: with his divine crown, four arms and two of his attributes — the wheel in his upper right hand and the ceremonial shell trumpet in his left hand. In regal attire and sumptuously bejewelled. Identifiable in the patterns and within the folds of the ‘Dhoti’ skirt are representations hidden there by the artist of the guardian spirits ‘Yalli’ or ‘Kirtimukha’. Yellow cast-alloy (brass with strong copper content), executed with ‘waste mould’ casting. With good, worn patina and remnants of sacred, sacrificial red. H: 12.2 cm. 18th/19th century. (ME)
