India: A small Hindu bronze: Lord Krishna dancing with the butter ball.
This Hindu bronze statuette from India shows the god Krishna (an incarnation of Vishnu) as a child, joyfully playing with a ball of butter on a round and angular plinth. The background of this representation is a loveable Hindu legend: when Krishna was a child, butter was his favourite food. Which he would often ‘steal’ from his mother and happily play with. Yellow cast-alloy (brass with strong copper content), executed with ‘waste mould’ casting. This perfectly sculpted figure exhibits ‘softly’ worn, good patina. No damage. H: 11.3 cm. 18th/19th century. (ME)
