Turkey, Syria: A round Ottoman brass vessel, with floral decorations and multicoloured enamel. 18th/19th century. - Tribal Art

A round, paunchy vessel made of brass, cast, milled and engraved. With typical Ottoman floral motifs in tessellated patterns. The blossoms comprise tulips, carnations and hyacinths. The decorations starting from the top: after an all-round band of wave-engravings comes the wide encircling band of the blossoms, each flower contained within a multitude of defined angular medallions. This principal patterns is delimited underneath by a band with nubs. And further below is yet another, thinner, all-round floral band, ending on both sides in volutes. Delimited at the very bottom by a band of densely engraved oblique lines. Alternately light green and dark blue enamel fills the surfaces between the blossoms, cast in relief, and the rims of the medallions. A few small remainders of retained red enamel. Produced using the old cast enamel or cell-melting technique. A very elaborately produced object from the point of view of craftsmanship. The enamel bears only small, age-related dents and some abrasion underneath. Ottoman-Turkish or Ottoman-Syrian. H: 14 cm, DM: 15.5 cm (upper rim). 18th/19th century. (ME)
