Ethiopia: Processional crucifix of the Ethiopian Christian Church, silver alloy. Type: Gondar.
A presentational or procession crucifix made of weak silver alloy. The centrepiece cross is created as a wicker pattern of narrow bands. The periphery is replete with sun symbols, volutes (possibly ram horns) and arches. Cast, cut and engraved from a single piece of material. Connected (by means of three white metal rivets) to a decoratively carved round grommet, also of the same material. During processions of the Ethiopian Christian Fellowship Church such presentation-crucifixes would be mounted on long poles and carried by priests (‘Debtera’). Type: Gondar, north-western Ethiopia. No damage. H: 30 cm, W: 17 cm. Mid-20th century. (ME)
