Lotto No. 120

Ethiopia: Processional crucifix of the Ethiopian Christian Church

Ethiopia: Processional crucifix of the Ethiopian Christian Church - Tribal Art

made in its entirety of very high quality silver. Type: Gondar. A presentational or procession crucifix made of very good silver. Cast, cut and engraved as a pentapartite structure with four of the parts consisting of tightly plaited narrow bands forming elided crosses. All five parts are soldered together by means of delicate, decoratively engraved silver plates. On all eight corners of the centre-cross are perched small bird heads. The lower end consists of four plaited silver bands curved into semi-circles. The whole crucifix rests on a round grommet bound together with two silver rivets. The grommet, too, including its three thickened rings, is made of high-quality silver. During processions of the Ethiopian Christian Fellowship Church such presentation-crucifixes would be mounted on long poles and carried by priests (‘Debtera’). The present Ethiopian procession crucifix is valuable and elaborately crafted. No damage. Type: Gondar, north-western Ethiopia. First half to mid-20th century. H: 45 cm, W: 32.5 cm. (ME)
