Carved each in one piece; in brown, hard wood. With rounded, long, smooth shafts and different heads:
1: Drop-shaped and upwardly tapered hexagonal club head. Surfaces decorated with linear bands and triangular, hatched, raised segments. The shaft displays a round thickening just under the club head. L: 52 cm.
2: Oval club-head, big and sturdy just as well as finely decorated with linear bands and geometric patterns in relief. L: 55 cm.
3: Rounded club-head with finely carved line decoration in relief. L: 48 cm.
4: Club-head similar to no. 3 — shaped like a ball, with fine line decorations in relief. Embellished as well as strengthened by three decorative nails on one of the sides. L: 43 cm. All four Chokwe clubs show visible traces of usage and each has an old, smooth and shiny patina. 19th century (ME)

Provenance: On the consignor’s account, all four clubs come from the familial estate of the Austrian Biedermeier painter Friedrich von Amerling (1803-1887).
