Lotto No. 118

Ethiopia: Arussi, Amarro, Oromo, etc. An old round shield.

Ethiopia: Arussi, Amarro, Oromo, etc. An old round shield. - Tribal Art

A round, black-dyed shield made of hippopotamus or buffalo hide. These round shields were manufactured by the tribes in the southcentral region of Ethiopia (Arussi-Galla, Oromo, etc.) as well as in the southwestern Sidamo region (Amarro, Hadiya, etc.). In the centre, these typical shields bear an elongated ridge in relief as a shield boss, surrounded by 6 large knops in relief. Relief lines radiate from this centre to the outer, repeatedly pierced, thick rim. Between these lines are two additional rows of decorative knops in relief. The robust, semicircular grip on the back is also made of leather. The characteristic shield displays four original repairs (with sewn leather straps), some cracks (probably traces of battle) as well as exceptionally good, old usage patina. 19th century; DM: 74 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.

Lit.: 'Afrikanische Schilde' by Plaschke & Zirngibl, ill. 59; 'Shields' by Benitez & Barbier, ill. 35, p. 104, 105. ASA
