A confederation of 18 tribes in southern Congo, the Kingdom of the Kuba (or Bakuba) has developed through the centuries a distinct textile tradition. The men use the dried light brown fibres of the raffia palm to weave the base layer. On its ‘facing’ side the women then attach appliqués in a variety of like or contrastingly coloured pieces. Created in this way is a dancing skirt, for both men and women, called ‘mapel’. A piece in good condition, temporally well-preserved (a few small tears). Dimensions: 282 cm x c. 55 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
