Congo (also called Bakongo), Dem. Rep. of Congo: A very old ivory trumpet with a seated figure above.

Congo (also called Bakongo), Dem. Rep. of Congo: A very old ivory trumpet with a seated figure above. - Tribal Art

A transverse horn made of old ivory. At the upper end sits a male figure with crossed legs on a stool, probably a king or an important chief. He holds an object in his left hand (a vessel?). In the middle of the transverse trumpet, the oval mouth lies on the inside. On the outside is an eyelet carved out from the same piece, for a carrying cord. The entire wind instrument is carved out of one piece of elephant tusk, trimmed with wickerwork out of rattan stripes in the lower half. A very old piece, with a reddish-brown to black shiny patina, the result of long use and frequent rubbing with palm oil. Only minor age-related damage: unimportant cracks on the figure, below the mouthpiece and at the lower edge. Otherwise no damage. L: 60 cm. 19th century to around 1900. (ME) ASA

Provenance: Dutch Collection; currently: Belgian Collection.
