Bamum, Cameroon Grasslands: A large pipe bowl of a splendid prestige pipe. With an elephant head, cast of brass and coloured black. Probably from a ‘king’s pipe’ (?). - Tribal Art

Kings, chiefs and elder dignitaries in the kingdoms of the grasslands (northwestern Cameroon) possessed such ceremonial and prestige tobacco pipes. The present pipe bowl is especially large and displays an elephant with tusks and raised trunk. It probably belonged to a large ‘king’s pipe’ (?). For a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 68. The pipe bowl is made of yellow cast-alloy (brass), executed with ‘waste mould’ casting and coloured black. It shows a very old, shiny usage patina with reddish traces. No damage. H: c. 20 cm; W: 19 cm. Between c. 1900 and the early 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: According to information of the consignor, purchased in 1973 in Fumban, the capital city of the Bamum territory in Cameroon. Since then: Austrian Private Collection.

Lit.: ‘Kamerun. Kunst der Könige’ by Lorenz Homberger, Rietberg Museum Zurich, fig. 42.
