Mixed lot (2 items): Baule, Ivory Coast: Two grips for catapults, carved with one head and three Baule masks.
1: Grip for a catapult, carved in light-coloured wood. Crowned with a typical, small Baule head. Beneath this sit two characteristic Goli buffalo masks of the Baule people, called 'Bo nun Amuin', in Janus form and upside down (back to back). The two tips of the catapult also constitute the horns of the rear buffalo masks. Two cracks in the wood of the head and the front mask. H: 18 cm, W: 6.5 cm.
2: Grip for a catapult, carved in light-coloured wood. Carved with a buffalo mask 'Bo nun Amuin' from the Goli mask dances of the Baule people. This Goli buffalo mask bears 4 horns, which are stylistically brought together in 2 ‘ears’. A small crack in the mask forehead at the front. H: 16 cm, W: 7 cm.
Both objects with fine usage patina. First half to mid-20th century. (ME)
