Lotto No. 38

Baule, Ivory Coast: A female mask of the ‘portrait mask’ type.

Baule, Ivory Coast: A female mask of the ‘portrait mask’ type. - Tribal Art

A Baule-Mask of the ‘portrait’ type (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 36). Carved in light-coloured wood, the face originally dyed black. Formed in typical Baule style: with a fine lined hairstyle consisting of 5 plaited braid-crests and two circular buns at left and right. With an arch of eight scarification marks on the forehead and two tattoos on the temples. With fine, protruding eyebrow arches, below which are heavy, lowered eyelids. Beneath the lids are narrow slits through which the masked dancer could look out. The serrated beard at the lower edge of the mask is for the Baule only a decorative element and has nothing to do with whether the mask is male or female. Due to the elaborate braided and crested coiffure this mask is probably 'female'. An old piece with good shiny patina on the front and back. Some minor damage: age-related colour scuffing at the front, as well as old breaks on the uppermost plait of the hairstyle and on the right ear of the mask. The visibly used bite-bar for the masked dancer (on the back) is broken. A crack at the top, at the rear edge, was repaired with an iron clamp (an old original repair). H: 28 cm; W: 14.5 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Belgian Collection.
