Lotto No. 34

Baule, Ivory Coast: A rare, large, male ancestor figure of the Baule people, very finely executed.

Baule, Ivory Coast: A rare, large, male ancestor figure of the Baule people, very finely executed. - Tribal Art

This relatively large, male Baule figure probably does not represent a ‘spiritual spouse’ (Blolo Bian), but rather an honoured clan founder or ancestor (called ‘Mamla’ by the Baule). The masterful execution of this sculpture, of hard wood, dyed black, is evidence of this: it displays a hairstyle in subtle lines and plaits at the side, with a high top-knot including terminating pommel. The typical, serious Baule face, with accentuated brows and eyes, flat nose and a mouth in the form of a horizontal figure '8', above the finely lined goatee, shows an unusual number of scarification marks on the forehead, on both temples and around the mouth. Also on the neck, chest, stomach and back an unusual number of scarification marks can equally be seen. The pectoral muscles and shoulder blades are emphasised. As are the delicate hands with freely-carved arms, and the sturdy, muscular, short legs which stand firmly on large feet on top of a rounded plinth. Overall a Baule sculpture of rare high quality. No damage (only one hole and small cracks to the base plate). H: 42 cm. First third to half 20th century (ME)

Provenance: Belgian Collection.

Lit.: 'Baule. African Art - Western Eyes' by Susan M. Vogel, ill. p. 31.
