Lotto No. 29

Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: A ‘fire runner’ or ‘Zakpai mask’, with good usage patina.

Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: A ‘fire runner’ or ‘Zakpai mask’, with good usage patina. - Tribal Art

A fire runner mask of the Dan (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 31). Made of hard wood, dyed black. With typical oval-pointed face, with an exaggerated eyebrow line, large, round and outlined eyes, small nose and an accentuated, attractive mouth area with downturned corners of the mouth. Above the forehead is a hole in which formerly an ‘energy giving’ iron spiral was inserted. The wholes in the chin, for attaching a plant fibre beard, as well as the border holes for the mask costume, are round on this mask (the later, younger type). None the less, the noticeable, slightly worn appearance and stained usage patina on the back of the mask (on the inside!) is proof that it was used for many a dance. Small, age-related damage: a break above the forehead, as well as a small crack on the back rim above, and a crack with old, original repair on the right inner side at the rear (glued). H: 21 cm; W: 12.5 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Viennese Private Collection.

Lit.: 'Die Kunst der Dan' by Fischer & Himmelheber, Rietberg Museum, Zurich, fig. 42–62.
