Bambara (or Bamana), Mali: A door lock in the form of a human figure, with cross-bar.
A door lock of the Bambara, for a house or a millet granary. Carved out of wood. The head above shows a typical female hairstyle of the Bambara. The rectangular body is decorated with fine, geometric line patterns. Below, two legs complete the representation of this full figure. A piece with an impressive, visibly very old usage patina on the lock body, and a cross-bar affixed to it by means of a wooden wedge. No damage. H: 48 cm, W: 38 cm. First third of the 20th century.
