Mossi, Burkina Faso: A tall mask in Karanga Style, known as ‘Karan Wemba’. With two crests: an antelope head and a female figure. - Tribal Art

A Mossi mask of the ‘Wango society’ from northern Burkina Faso. Carved from hard wood, coloured brown and white. The white-coloured face of the mask is slightly concave, curving inwards, bears three vertical, white framing lines, as well as three horizontal lines as decorative scarification marks at the height of both temples. It has small, square eyes and a jagged, vertical central ridge (instead of nose and mouth). In addition, the mask displays two crests on the crown of the head: a smaller antelope head on the front, with curved, spiral decorated horns, and behind this, a female sculpture with crested coiffure and white accentuated scarification marks on the face, on the cheeks and on the body. Carved from a single piece. An old object with very good, mainly shiny usage patina (especially on the mask on the back). A minor tear to the border of the rear mask, as well as a small fracture on the inside at the back. Otherwise no damage. H: 93 cm; W: 17 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: German Private Collection.
