Klass was a Dresden-based landscape painter who, was admitted to the Dresden Academy in 1800. In 1816 he became an associate professor at the Academy. Klass was an outstanding draughtsman. In Thieme-Becker it states that: ‘Klass’ landscapes, which always incorporate figural staffage, show both a strong dynamism and a keen observation of nature, such that he must be assigned a place at the threshold between the periods of Late Baroque and Realism.’
