Lotto No. 357

Paolo Monaldi - a pair (2)

Paolo Monaldi - a pair (2) - Dipinti antichi

(Rome circa 1750–1800)
A Rural scene with carousing peasants; and A music-making party outdoors
the second monogrammed on the jug left of centre: PM
oil on canvas, 39.4 x 49.7 cm, framed, a pair (2)

Paolo Monaldi painted mainly bambocciate, scenes featuring peasants engaged in the simple pleasures of country life: playing games and music, drinking and dancing. They are set in an arcadian atmosphere without subordinating them to the landscape. The settings frequently include ruined, thatched buildings. In 1767 Monaldi helped Paolo Anesi in the decoration of the Villa Chigi on Via Salaria, Rome, where he painted a series of idyllic scenes. In the 1770s he probably participated in another such decorative venture in the 18th-century apartments of the Palazzo Barberini, where the bambocciate on the doors have been attributed to him.

The first of the pair shows a group of peasants drinking wine, listening to a musician who sits on the side. In the second of these lively scenes, a young girl plays violin accompanied by another musician while an elderly man standing to the right listens thoughtfully and a young man sits at the side, enjoying the music.
