Andreas Schelfhout was a pupil of the theatre scenery painter Johannes Breckenheimer. He specialised in landscape painting and made his successful artistic breakthrough at the age of 28 with a ‘Winter landscape’. As well as landscapes of his native country, throughout his life he repeatedly painted winter landscapes. He painted in style of the Old Masters during the early years of his career until discovering his own style.
