Monkey
clear glass, blown, unsigned, height 37 cm
Věra Lišková first studied with prof. Holeček, then with prof. Kaplický and Štipl at the VŠUP in Prague. Upon graduation, she designed drinking glasses and she made designs for the Moser and Lobmeyr Glassworks, among others. From 1965 she worked as a freelance artist. She selected a technique of shaping glass sculptures by blowing over a flame. With this technique, atypical for Czechoslovakia, she created a large number of small figurines of animals that are enchanting in their distinctive poetry and fragility. She also only rarely designed larger animals and, from the 1970s, abstract objects as well.
The sculpture on offer is likely from the first half of the 1970s, when she designed a large lion, for example. The monkey doesn’t appear in the academic literature. It’s a newly discovered work that reveals the artist’s uncommon fantasy and skill.
