The present portrait shows the Austrian diplomat Count János Forgách de Ghymes et Gács (1870-1935) in the uniform of an ambassador, with the Commander Cross of Merit of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Star of the Grand Cross of the Imperial Austrian Franz Joseph Order. Count János Forgách played an important role as diplomat during the July Crisis of 1914, including partial responsibility in the fateful ultimatum to Serbia. In 1918 he was in Kiev as envoy to the Ukrainian People's Republic.
