Iran, c. 270 x 94 cm, beginning of the 19th century, early Kurdish runner from the Sautchbulag region with large jagged leaves surrounding the centrally arranged stylised octagonal blossoms with eight small birds; although the use of this field pattern was widespread throughout Azerbaijan, the present piece is special in that both its pattern and colours are particularly agreeable and neatly arranged, both ends original, side edges rebound, low pile wool as a result of age, no repairs can be discerned, all sides backed with linen band on the reserve. (MA)
