Italy (Europe), c. 205 x 144 cm, about 1600, silk and wool embroidery with pressed golden wire on fine, two-piece ground made of cotton binding warp and silk lancé weft, the ends of the long sides stitched with silver threads in appliqué technique, pattern in elliptic lattice consisting of handled vases with bizarre floral images and birds of prey in pairs; most 17th-century silk fabrics were manufactured in the weavers’ workshops of France and Italy as a result of a high demand in Europe, the present fabric was part of a wall covering, which not only met decorative needs but was also a response to thermal considerations, offering protection against the cold in the winter months, the item on offer displays a good state of preservation and vivid colours, showcasing the excellent artistic skills of the time, secured with fabric on the back.
