Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey

Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey - Fotografia

(France 1804-1892) "106. Kaire. Boutique et Cafe." ca. 1843, daguerreotype, half-plate, image dim. 18 x 11,5 cm, verso with label, here with the title in ink and numbered, mounted between two glass panes, the edges sealed with adhesive paper tape, (EK)

Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangeys had a passionate interest in Middle Eastern architecture where he worked as a photographer and draughtsman. From 1841 to 1844 he travelled in Italy and the Eastern Mediterranean. His daguerreotypes are among the earliest known pictures taken of Greece, Palestine, Syria, and Turkey. Remarkably, his photographs were only discovered in the 1920ies in a storage room belonging to his estate. Even so, it would take another 80 years before they were published. De Prangey studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he was acquainted with daguerreotype technique either by Louis Daguerre himself or by Hippolyte Bayard.
